Film systems: Durable activation of plastic films

Increasing surface tension

It is possible to coat plastic films only when they have been durably activated. In order to print onto the plastic it is necessary to increase the surface tension of the material because plastic has a low inherent surface tension. After pretreatment with Openair® plasma the films can accept printing inks in optimum fashion. In processes commonly used hitherto, such as corona treatment or flame treatment, the surface tension falls again after a relatively short time.

The use of film systems having flat slit-shaped jets makes it possible to exploit the effectiveness of atmospheric-pressure plasma across any desired width. In this way high-grade and durable pretreatment of the entire surface of the film is guaranteed. An additional positive side effect in the pretreatment of plastic with Openair® plasma is a distinct antistatic effect.

Advantages and characteristics of activation of plastic films by Openair® plasma
  • Durable pretreatment due to high level of surface activation
  • Possibility of partial activation
  • Additional cleaning effect on additives
  • Antistatic effect.
  • Treatment width per jet = 25 mm
  • Pretreatment on one side
  • High processing speeds of up to 200 m/min.
