Foil systems: Openair® plasma technology for efficient treatment as cleaning of aluminium foil

Coating of composite materials

Openair® plasma is a simple and environmentally friendly method for cleaning aluminium surfaces. Composite films are employed especially for the production of packaging for beverages or foods in order to keep the packaging units gastight. In these cases thin aluminium foil (aluminium layer) serves as a coating. The aluminium is additionally coated with PE to ensure that it does not come into direct contact with the contents.

Removal of oil and dirt

In the film system the aluminium is pretreated with Openair® plasma so that it can form an optimum composite material with the film of PE. All organic substances such as dirt and oil are broken down on the surface of the material by the plasma energy. In doing this the plasma jets are integrated “in-line” into the existing overall process.

The annealing process frequently employed in industry is a comparatively time-consuming and energy-intensive process.

Advantages and characteristics of Openair® pretreatment of aluminium foils
  • Capable of in-line integration (no stoppage of the process)
  • Energy-saving, low-cost and environmentally friendly process
  • No change in the mechanical properties of the foil
  • Selective, partial cleaning
  • Usual treatment width per jet = 10 mm (100 jets / m)
  • Usual treatment widths of foils = 2.20 m
  • Foil treated on both sides
  • Integration into the process before winding on coils
