Plasmatreat at the NPE 2015: Optimizing adhesive processes in automobile lightweight construction

At NPE 2015 (March 23 - 27), North America's largest plastics show, Plasmatreat will demonstrate live how bad adhesion properties of plastic surfaces can be changed in seconds to good ones with the aid of Openair®-Plasma technology.

Openair®-Plasma for lightweight construction materials in the automotive industry

This year Plasmatreat is focusing on the atmospheric plasma pretreatment of lightweight construction materials for the automotive industry. The non-polar surfaces of carbon- or glass fiber-reinforced plastics (CFK / GFK) cannot be bonded without an effective pretreatment. Plasmatreat will demonstrate the high degree of automation and radius of operation of the latest RD2005 double plasma nozzle system in a KUKA robot enclosure, as well as the treatment of fiber-reinforced plastic composites and high-performance plastics such as PA11, PA12, PPA, PPS and PEEK.

In a second rotary plasma nozzle system, visitors will be able to see the plasma effect for themselves by testing it live on their own sample. The increase in surface energy can easily be detected; visually, by spraying the plasma-treated surface with water and observing the homogenous wettability as it becomes visible, and with absolute precision by taking surface measurements. And this is where tradeshow partner Brighton Technologies comes in; they will be demonstrating their latest 'Surface Analyzer', an instrument which reveals all the wetting properties of a component surface in just three seconds, before and after plasma treatment. This instrument is unique in that it can be integrated into automated production lines alongside Plasmatreat pretreatment systems.
