Plasmatreat at nano tech 2008 in Japan

At nano tech 2008 in Tokyo under the heading “Plasma Polymerisation with Openair® Plasma” Plasmatreat presented the globally unique process of plasma polymerisation at atmospheric pressure.

With around 50,000 visitors and 522 international exhibitors the nano tech trade fair in Tokyo is regarded as the most important exhibition and conference event in the nano sector. Probably nowhere else can the applications and trends for producing miniscule particles and methods and equipment for manipulating them be better observed than in the homeland of the world’s largest consumer electronics manufacturers.

Yasuhiko Tsurumoto, Managing Director of Nihon Plasmatreat Inc., Osaka, Japan, and his team together with Plasmatreat representative Kou Kyokusai of San Fan Machinery Ind. Co. Ltd., Taipeh, Taiwan, presented the latest developments in the field of “Nano Cleaning by Openair® Plasma”.

The newly developed laboratory system “Plasmacoating AS400” aroused particular interest among trade visitors. This system is used not only for computer-controlled process evaluation in the laboratory to determine optimum treatment parameters for a future volume production plant, but also affords the possibility of plasma polymerisation with Openair® plasma in the test phase.

“Plasmapolymer Coating by Openair® Plasma” was also the subject of a lecture given to over one hundred specialists by Christian Buske, Managing Director of Plasmatreat GmbH, Steinhagen, Germany, under the aegis of the integrated trade conference Convertech Japan 2008.

Plasma nano coating developed under the name of PlasmaPlus® allows, inter alia, selective protection of metals against corrosion, reduces diffusion through plastics and produces functional, hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces.

To produce a coating an organosilicon compound is mixed with the atmospheric-pressure plasma employed here. Due to the low quantities and non-toxic nature of the chemicals used for the coating the process also safeguards the environment because additional solvents are not needed. Since the applied nano coating contains no harmful compounds it does not have to be removed prior to any recycling process. The coatings together with the substrate material can be passed on for reuse.

The process is unique in the world. Plasma treatment that otherwise takes place only in low-pressure chambers can now be done for the first time at atmospheric pressure. For the user this means great economic efficiency.
