SAE 2009 World Congress -
"Racing to Green Mobility"
![]()

This motto, chosen by the Society of Automotive Engineers for their SAE World Congress (Detroit, April 20-23) was a perfect fit for the OpenairĀ® plasma technology being presented.
The more than 300 international exhibitors had been officially asked to mark their “green“ products at their booths. Techniques for reducing the environmental impact of production are essential in today’s market and it was the aim of the SAE to showcase these technologies.
Openair plasma technology is already a benchmark in several industrial sectors when it comes to “protection of the environment” when pretreating surfaces. It often replaces hazardous wet chemical processes, and can open the door to using water-based coatings and solvent-free adhesives.
Visitors to the show got a live demonstration of an OpenairĀ® system. A rotational jet combined with the new FG5001 generator was onsite at the Plasmatreat booth for attendees to observe and even have samples of their own materials treated. This new generator was presented at the SAE for the first time. In addition to it’s new design and increased process control, this latest series of generators has the ability to deliver consistent plasma when supplied with an incoming voltage of 100-250VAC.
Shaun Glogauer, Marketing and Sales Manager, Plasmatreat North America, Inc., presented a paper during the “Advances in Coatings” seminar at the show. The title is “ Plasma Treatment: Reduction of VOC Emissions With Environmentally Friendly Surface Treatment Prior to Bonding, Coating and Printing Applications“. This paper will be published in a forthcoming SAE publication on Automotive Materials.
