GfO: Crystal clear appearance

GfO Gesellschaft für Oberflächentechnik mbH (Surface Technology Corporation) is an internationally active company in the field of the most challenging technical and optical finishes for surfaces. We coat plastic mouldings with metals, oxides and transparent varnishes.

In the case of transparent scratchproof coatings for plastic components, such as display fascias, it is necessary – given the high levels of automation required today – to devise in-line processes. Openair® plasma technology developed by Plasmatreat allowed us to implement the cleaning and activation of the delicate glazing surfaces in the form of a fully automated clean-room painting system that is environmentally friendly, economically efficient and has high in-line speeds.

For the automotive engineering sector alone we pretreat thousands of plastic fascias every year and give them a scratchproof coating. In addition there are large volumes of display windows for other sectors such as for medical technology, for white goods, aviation or the electronics industry. Without additional ultrafine cleaning and activation of plastic parts prior to painting, however, it is not possible to ensure the long-term adhesion of the paint and the immaculate, crystal clear appearance of the surface. By using Openair® plasma GfO was able to fulfil these high demands of industry.

The process has been in use in series production since the beginning of 2007 and we are very pleased with this easy-to-maintain and environmentally friendly in-line solution for the series pretreatment of plastic components to be given a scratchproof coating.
